5 Signs That Led Me to My Purpose
Finding one’s true calling or purpose is a journey, and for me, that calling is being an author. It took me years to embrace this title and a few more to understand my gift would provide all my needs, as The Word says. Here are the five pivotal moments that confirmed being an author is my purpose.

1. The Game of Life: A Pulitzer Prize
My love for writing began early. I started reading at age 4 but, around the age of 8 or 9, while playing the Game of Life, I drew the “You Won a Pulitzer Prize” card. This moment sparked something inside me, a sense of destiny. At such a young age I couldn’t fully grasp the depth of a Pulitzer Prize. However, learning I could get paid $50,000 for writing a book stuck, as you see. The thrill of imagining myself as a Pulitzer Prize-winning author stayed with me, inspiring my future writing endeavors.

2. Writing Fiction and Making Books Came Naturally
From crafting short stories in elementary school to writing (not typing) my first book in fifth grade, writing fiction came naturally to me. As a child, I would spend hours lost in my imagination, creating Black characters in worlds I couldn’t find in school books nor the neighborhood library This natural inclination toward storytelling solidified my passion for writing. |
3. A Lifelong Vision of Writing
I could always envision myself writing stories and books forever. I made this decision in 5th grade as well. I planned to be lawyer when I grew up and then retire at 50 and write books and novels until God called me home. This lifelong vision was not just a fleeting interest but a deep-seated conviction. The idea of spending my life crafting narratives and sharing them with the world filled me with joy and purpose.
4. Studying and Writing to Become an Expert

4. Studying and Writing to Become an Expert
To turn my passion into a profession, I dedicated myself to studying and writing extensively. I immersed myself in literature, especially Black Literature. I attended top PWIs to hone my skill and get on the level as my idols, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Gwendolyn Brooks and so many more. This commitment to becoming an expert in the field of Creative Writing further confirmed that being an author was my true purpose.
5. Divine Affirmation: Because God Said So!
Ultimately, the strongest affirmation came from a God. Gospel Songs like the Blessing of Abraham by Donnie McClurkin and several sermons from my pastor, William Gates (Thrive Ministries) opened my eyes to see and accept my purpose as an author. Studying Abraham’s Story, Habakkuk 2:2-3, And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it, and Proverbs 18:16-17, A man's gift maketh room for him, And bringeth him before great men. All these things and more left me with a divine calling, a sense that God had placed this purpose in my heart. This spiritual confirmation gave me the confidence to pursue writing with unwavering faith and determination.
