The Lit nonprofit was created to meet two urgent needs: the need for more inclusive literary spaces and the need for stronger literacy support in our communities. Too many readers grow up without seeing themselves reflected in the stories they read, and too many talented writers never receive the encouragement or platform they need to share their voices.
That is why we created The Lit! Black Literary Journal and expanded its purpose beyond publishing. The Lit is more than a literary journal. It is a literacy-centered movement that supports readers, writers, and communities by combining creative writing, culturally relevant literature, and educational outreach.
